Ideally you will use 4 Gnawed Bones (5 when you don't get a perfect dismantle during the chain). Hopefully you get them all by dismantling the Basic Tool Repair you get from Lyle and Junior Malik.

How to get the Gnawed Bones you need

Analyze the first book you get from Lyle, if it fails get another from Junior Malik, repeat until you have the book analyzed.
- Note that in order for Junior Malik to give you more Basic Tool Repair you must COMPLETE Lyle Needs Silicon Carbide, Coatin' A Crucible, and Sunshine in a Bottle (Mission) and you need to have picked up the mission Glop 'n Saws or the one following it, Sticks and Stones
Get a book and dismantle it, repeat until you have a Lil' Bang Stick. DESTROY THE Mitey Bore 'N Saw Junior you get while doing this, you can analyze it, but there is no need.
Analyze the bang stick. Get and dismantle books until you have the stick mapped.
Dismantle the Lil' Bang Stick. Get new books/bang sticks until you have a Gnawed Bone.
Repeat until you have 2x Gnawed Bones on alts and 1x on your play toon
Repeat until you end up with 1x Basic Tool Repair, 1x Mitey Bore 'N Saw Junior, 1x Lil' Bang Stick, 1x Gnawed Bone.

Now you can choose to give Lyle the Saw you have in Glop 'n Saws, or try to analyze it.
If it fails, well, you know how to get one now. Junior Malik will stop handing out books once you complete Glop 'n Saws.
