Overview
Trade experience is primarily acquired by trading items with other players (or your own characters), Jobs, Trade Routes, and when you sell (to an NPC station vendor) loot acquired through combat or for Explorer class pilots, the materials you've acquired from mining.
When you have accumulated enough points to bring your magenta-colored trade bar up to 100% you will:
- advance to the next trade level
- gain a Skill Point(s) (used to upgrade any of your skills)
- reset your trade bar to zero
As your Trade level increases, the number of experience points needed to reach 100% also increases. The maximum trade level is 50. After level 50, you can still earn trade experience points and a skill point per level, but the trade level number will remain at 50.
Key Considerations
- ALWAYS trade your loot to another player before selling it. You get 2x the experience for trading it to another player as you do for selling it to a vendor.
- The most trade xp is gained from trading with a Terran Tradesman (TT)
- The higher the level of the item you are trading, the more experience points and credits (cash) you will gain.
- For Explorer class pilots, refining your raw ore at a station's Refining terminal will increase its sale value significantly. You should be aware however that some ores are useful in their unrefined state and are vastly more valuable than anything a station vendor will offer you (e.g. Discordite).
- You will obtain better buy/sell prices from station vendors if your character possesses the Negotiate skill (available to all Terrans, and Tradesman-class pilots from the other races: Progen Privateers and Jenquai Seekers.
- The Terran Tradesman offers a group bonus to everyone that will increase the prices they get when selling to station vendors so group with one!
- When selling loot or trading it, always sell or trade the lowest level items first. They will bring you the least amount of trade XP to begin with, and even less once you have gained levels if you have enough to level up. (you get zero XP for trading items five levels below one fifth of your trade level, and about one per item for things four levels below the same one fifth of your trade level.)
- To maximize trade XP and credits earned on mined goods: Mine the ore, Trade it to another player, trade it back to the miner, refine it, trade the refined good to another player, sell the good (either on the miner or the other character, whichever has the higher level Negotiate skill).
Gaining Trade XP
There are several ways of gaining Trade Experience:
- Buying trade goods and delivering them via certain Trade Routes (aka "Trade Runs")
- Certain Missions may give Trade XP as a mission reward
- Take Trade Jobs at a starbase Job Terminal (unlike trade runs, these are formal contracts and occupy space in your Mission Log).
- Refining (explorer-class pilots only: JE, PS, TS)
- Building components or items of ship equipment
- Trading looted or prospected items to other players (you will gain more trade experience points by trading your goods to another player, than if you sell them directly to an NPC vendor)
- Selling looted or prospected items to station vendors
Skills with a Trade Level Prerequisite
Your Trade Level (TL) is a prerequisite for the upgrading of particular skills:
