Solar Sails

Solar Sails are a range of Bogeril-designed Engines which have no signature. Using one of these engines therefore decreases your chances of being detected by hostile ships or life-forms. This is paticularly useful for Explorer class pilots engaged in mining, as asteroid fields can sometimes contain wandering adversaries.

Note that while a Solar Sail engine contributes nothing to your ship's radar-signature, the signature applicable to your ship remains unchanged by it (2500k for Terrans and Progens, 500k for Jenquai).

There are a number of Jenquai-designed engines which possess a signature-reduction buff, and these can reduce your total signature significantly, but due to residual national animosity the Jenquai have restricted these engines in such a way that they cannot be used by Progen pilots. Progen miners who wish to rig their ship for "silent running" will therefore start with installing a Solar Sail, and acquire signature-reduction buffs from other varieties of ship equipment.

In-game, any level of Solar Sail engine is often abbreviated as ss, but you need to be aware that this abbreviation is also used to refer to varieties of Shooting Star reactors. You should check, in the event that context does not make this clear in an in-game chat channel.
