This raid is triggered by assembling the level 9 Oni Communications Device, having it in your hold and scanning the Continuum Wrinkle in Xipe Totec to summon the Zenrei Tempest.

There are four sub-component devices required to build the Oni Communications Device, one of which can be built by any race or class of Device Builder WITH MAXIMUM DEVICE BUILD SKILLS. The other three are class-specific and must each be built by a Jenquai Explorer or Seeker, Terran Trader, and Progen Sentinel.

The encounter with the CL66 Zenrei Tempest (and four or five CL60 Oni Warriors) can be successfully survived with two high-level groups or one experienced and well-equipped group.

Raid Preparation

Acquiring the Prints for the Oni Communications Device and Sub-Component Devices

The first step to acquiring the prints for the Oni Communications Device and Sub-Component Devices is to acquire a L9 Slagged Oni Communication Device.

Loot a Slagged Oni Communication Device

The Slagged OCD is a somewhat common drop from all Oni MOBs in XT. The higher the combat level of the Oni, the more likely it is to drop a Slagged OCD.

Slagged OCDs are "Not Tradable", so they must be looted by the Device Builder that will eventually build each of the Class-specific sub-component devices.

Acquire Schematic for the Oni Communication Device

With a looted Slagged OCD in your cargo hold, you must then visit Kigoshi Saruta in the lounge of Yasuragi station in Yasuragi Area accessible via the Swooping Eagle planet nav in Swooping Eagle sector.

Afraid I haven't recorded the exact talk-tree here, so anyone else who has should feel free to fill in the blanks..! {blah, blah ... I wish to find/speak to your master." "I insist" -- or something to that effect.}

If you have the Slagged OCD in your cargo hold, Kigoshi Saruta will express surprise and then explain that she has been trying to contact the Zenrei Guardian Tempest, but eventually gave up.

If you are insistent, she will add the schematic for the Oni Communication Device to your Build-List, and then advise that you need to speak to someone who is:

"...experienced with magnets who can help redesign the Colloidal Magnetic Transmitter."

Acquire Schematic for the Colloidal Magentic Transmitter

This person is Zachariah Garrett, and he loiters in the lobby of the Dahin Mining Interest station, Tokai Saikutsu.

When you speak to Zachariah Garrett, he will then ask you to bring him three items:

  • 1x CE3K X93 Relay - Level 9 Loot-Only Component.
    • The CE3K X93 Relay can be ripped from the Sculptor Prime IPS 9 Device that can be purchased at Joves Fury, Jupiter.
    • It can also be player-built using 1 x Aesirium; 1 x Modredium; 1 x Balderium.
  • 1x Brimstone Alchemist - Level 9 Loot-Only Component.
    • The Brimstone Alchemist can be ripped from the Augustus IX Reactor that can be purchased at Arx Magister, Mars.
    • It can also be player-built using 1 x Aesirium; 1 x Arthurian Plastic; 1 x Tiberium.
  • 1x Star Steel - Level 5 Refined ore.
    • Star Steel can be ripped from L5 comps:
      • Evolver Fire Master (the cheapest comp)
      • Evolver PowR-Graft
      • Mi Fast Loader XT
      • Nova Armored Case level 5 components.
      • Star Steel can also be refined from 5 pieces of Level 3 Star Iron; which is in turn refined from Level 3 Star Iron Ore.

After returning to Zachariah Garrett with the 3 items he requests, the schematic for the Colloidal Magnetic Transmitter will be added to your build recipes.

Class/Race-Specific Schematics

Each of the three classes of Device Builder will then be asked to locate one of three ships in Xipe Totec.

  • Jenquai Device Builders will be asked to "Search for an abandoned Sha'ha'dem ship near the Continuum Wrinkle in Xipe Topec to find information about the Comm Power Source." The "Sha'ha'dem Adept" ship is to the south-west of the Continuum Wrinkle (x:82.11, y:7.35). As your Jenquai approaches the Nav Point, the "eye" icon for scanning will appear above the target window. Scanning the "Sha'ha'dem Adept" ship will advance the mission. The Jenquai must then travel to Fenris Prime Observatory and meet Liam O'Faolain, who will decipher the information and load the schematic for the Comm Power Source into your Build-List.
  • Terran Trader Device Builders will be asked to "Find a wrecked InfinitCorp ship on the radiated side of Xipe Totec. It should have data for the Comm Relay Conduit schematic." The wrecked InfinitCorp ship is the "Empty InfinityCorp Trader" to the south of "Asteroid XT-174" in Xipe Totec (x:62.41, y-94.10:). As your Terran Trader approaches this Nav Point, the "eye" icon for scanning will appear above the target window. Scanning the "Empty InfinityCorp Trader" ship will advance the mission. The Terran Trader must then travel to Inverness Down station on Planet Inverness and speak to Maks Babin, who will extract the data necessary and load the schematic for the Comm Relay Conduit into your Build-List.
  • Progen Sentinel Device Builders will be asked to "Search for the designer of the Comm Shielding Array in the radiated area of Xipe Totec." The designer of the Comm Shielding Array is in the "Reclaimer" ship, about 80k west of "Dragon's Watch Gamma" (-33.62, -15.78). As your Sentinel approaches the Nav Point, a speech bubble will appear above the target window. Speaking to the "Reclaimer" will start a conversation about the Reclaimer being missing in action. He will then ask you to report his survival to the "Nearest Progen Station to Xipe Totec." The nearest Progen station to Xipe Totec is (apparently...) Detention Centre Onorom in Asteroid Belt Gamma. Approaching DCO, a speech bubble will appear next to the docking and registering icons. You can then inform them of the Reclaimer's survival, before returning to the Reclaimer in Xipe Totec. After you report back to the Reclaimer in Xipe Totec, he will load the schematic for the Comm Shielding Array into your Build List.

Assembling the Device

The Oni Communications Device (OCD) can be assembled by any race/class with max. Device Build skill.

The OCD is constructed from four sub-component level 9 devices:

Colloidal Magnetic Transmitter - All Races' Device Builders

The Colloidal Magnetic Transmitter can be built by any race/class with max. Device Build skill. It is constructed from four loot-only components that drop from MOBs in Xipe Totec (XT) around the Contiuum Wrinkle:

  • Level 6 Reclaimed Manes Essence. In Live, it was possible for Progen Sentinels to purchase a "Manes Reclaimer" device (at different levels) that would refine Manes' essence when looted from Manes' corpses with the Reclaimer device equipped. The Manes Reclaimer devices are not currently functioning as designed in the Emulator. Level 6 Reclaimed Manes Essence are however a rare drop from the CL51 "Splendid Manes" in XT. IMPORTANT: This is MUCH easier to rip from a looted DV-PSI-X4 "Profiler" Mk. IX

Comm Power Source - Jenquai Device Builders Only

The Comm Power Source may only be built by Jenquai classes with max. Device Build skill. It is constructed from:

  1. Veil NGC 8 - Level 8 Reactor. The Veil NGC 8 Reactor is dropped by CL47 Free Spacer Viceroy MOBs in Ragnarok. It may also be built by players using components (for the L7 reactor, and the upgrade comp for the L8) that can all be purchased at your favourite space station vendor.
  2. Warlock Channeler - Level 9 Component. Available to buy from any Level 9 Component Vendor.

Comm Relay Conduit - Terran Trader Device Builders Only

The Comm Relay Conduit may only be built by Terran Traders with max. Device Build skill. It is constructed from:

  1. Bald Eagle - Level 8 Engine. The Bald Eagle engine is dropped by CL48 Free Spacer Regent MOBs in Kitara's Veil. The level 7 Eagle engine requires one non-vendor comp: the Cyclo Power Binder, which can be ripped from the CE-X6 "Palomino" Mk. VII L7 Engine that can be bought at F7. All other comps, including the L8 upgrade comp can be purchased at vendors and the L8 Bald Eagle engine be player-made.
  2. Quark Optical Relay - Level 9 Component. Available to buy from any Level 9 Component Vendor.

Comm Shielding Array - Progen Sentinel Device Builders Only

The Comm Shielding Array may only be built by Progen Sentinels with maximum Device Build skill. It is constructed from:

  1. Sumter VIII - Level 8 Shield. The Sumter VIII is dropped by CL50 Bio-Extractor MOBs in Grissom, Fenris and Xipe Totec. The Sumter shield line can be built-up by players from level 5 using vendor-comps, but the level 8 upgrade component is a CE3K KlugazerII Datacore that cannot be purchased at vendors. It can be ripped from the L8 Trebuchet Max Missile Launcher that can be purchased at Arx Magister, Mars or as a relatively easy to get drop from CL46 Body Snatcher. NOTE: a looted Sumter VIII can be ripped by a PS who can make the Comm Shielding Array.
  2. Evolver Icebox - Level 9 Component. Available to buy from any Level 9 Component Vendor.

Tips on Acquiring Components for the Oni Communications Device

Oni Mobs appear to spawn more frequently if an explorer is mining the (many) L7 - L9 asteroids, crystals, hydrocarbons and gas clouds around the Continuum Wrinkle.

In "Live", the component drops for the Colloidal Magnetic Transmitter were very rare. They appear to be less rare in the Emulator.

The Sumter Shield, Veil Reactor and Bald Eagle Engine are rarer drops from the respective MOBs (especially the Sumter VIII Shield). However, once you have the schematics for the Oni Communication Device sub-components, you can purchase Player-Made items, create the respective OCD sub-component, then dismantle to obtain items that can be analysed if you want the prints yourself.

having just spent 3 days solid, farming for this quest, only have managed to get 3 of the 4 items. The level 36 oni bioflux pheremones, still havent dropped. Be preparred to spend a LOT of time farming the components for this mission. The mining trick, didnt change anything for me. The 36 oni's spawn in a few places, spawn time seems to be between 1 min and 5 mins. Asteroid xt129 for example, they spawn both north and south of this nav, 1 at a time.

Raid Execution

Summoning the Zenrei Tempest

With your group(s) assembled and your Oni Communications Device in your hold (not equipped!), approach and target the Continuum Wrinkle. The eye "scan" icon will appear above your target window. Scanning the Continuum Wrinkle will cause four CL55 Oni Protectors to spawn. Once they have been killed the CL66 Zenrei Tempest to appear, along with four CL60 Oni Warriors.

Battle Tactics

  • The Guardian and the Onis do not need to be killed in any particular order, and since the Guardian deals the most damage, it makes the most sense to kill it first, before turning your attention to the CL60 Onis. The boss has over 9k range.
    • if you have group cloak, and any lag, its easier to kill the guards first.
  • If you have two groups, one group should focus on the Guardian whilst the other group deals with the Onis.
    • If using a single group it is recommended to group stealth (JE) in close and kill one guard at a time before warping away.
    • NOTE: this raid is in a grav well so using a JE, with max navigate and L7 Nav Computer II, to lead or having a TS for nullfactor is very, very useful.
  • Be aware that other non-Encounter-related MOBs in the area will also take an interest in you. This can include CL41, 45 and 50 Onis and CL51 Manes. Your clean-up group will have to take care of these as well.
  • Once you have killed the Guardian and swatted the Oni Warriors and any bystanders, loot at your leisure. All loot items are tradeable and only the L9 Reactor is unique.
