Floating an item refers to removing it from the corpse of a mob which dropped it or a prospecting node, but not actually picking it up.
This has the fairly surprising result of making the item persist in space indefinitely until the server is rebooted and allows ANYONE to pick up the item, regardless of who had looting rights on the corpse.
In order to float an item:
- Check all of the following:
- you are relatively far away (max looting range) from the corpse
- you don't have any devices installed which increase the speed of your tractor beam
- you aren't in a gravity well or have Nullfactor Field or a similar effect
- your reactor has enough energy to warp
- Click to loot the item and then rapidly press 'Q' (by default) to engage warp
If done correctly engaging warp should cause your tractor beam to be broken and the item in question will be left "floating" in space.
It is generally considered good etiquette to float any rare items that you don't need such as those from Named Mobs or Raids.
This is also commonly referred to as "spacing" an item (not to be confused with Destroying it).
