A deflect (aka a "combat buff") is a numerical figure indicating an amount of damage-resistance which your ship possesses. There are various different types of damage which enemies can deal out, and your ship has a corresponding deflect category for each one. You can inspect your ship's deflect values by hitting the "I"-key when in-game. The higher each number is, the less an enemy's hit-points in this category will damage your ship. If a deflect value is negative, your ship will be especially vulnerable to that type of damage.
Deflect values can be increased (buffed) or decreased (de-buffed) by the use of various devices and other ship equipment. Depending on the equipment being used, activated buffs may be applied either:
- only to the player, or
- to the player and members of the player's group, or
- any targetable pilot, or
- only to an enemy.
Deflect value-changes from ship equipment can be either:
- Active (i.e. have to be manually applied, as above), or
- Passive (i.e. the deflect is automatically applied for as long as the item of ship equipment remains installed)
Devices for each type of Deflect:
The following ranges of Explorer only devices increase deflect(s) for particular category/ies of damage. Each range startes at Level 3, and are only able to be activated on yourself and your group members. Additional equip (passive) deflect/weaken categories may also apply, as the level of device increases (e.g. the L6 Rhinoceros Horn includes deflect plasma (equip) and weaken chemical (equip) in addition to deflect impact (activated)).
- Impact (Rhinoceros Horn devices)
- Energy (Chameleon Skin devices)
- EMP (Armadillo Plate devices)
- Explosive (Turtle Shell devices)
- Plasma (Leopard Spots devices)
- Chemical (Elephant Hide devices)
- Psionic (Corona Australis and L7 Sai'Li's Circle devices)
